Australia must be growing up! As far as I can ascertain, Anna Bligh's win as Premier of Queensland hasn't inspired one sexist comment in the media! In fact, most of the media reports are taking pride in her achievement as the first woman to be elected Premier of an Australian State by the general public. Me too!

Tax issues for women

In looking at the tax issues raised by Professor Apps in the paper she wrote for NFAW and talking to Michelle Wingett who is very knowledgeable about tax implications for single mothers, it is clear that women are vulnerable because of Australia's system of family taxation. Higher tax rates can often end up applying to the lowest income earners.

Australia day awards for good women

Australia day awards this year celebrated the work of many good women, including Western Australian Claudia Keech who was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the community through raising awareness of the issues surrounding the roles of women in the workforce and at home.

Australian foreign aid still rules out abortion

Barack Obama has stolen the march on the Australian government, and removed the prohibition on US aid for international family planning groups that promote or provide information, counselling or referrals about abortion services. A similar discriminatory policy was John Howard's contribution to Australia's foreign aid in 1996.

Despite the shortage of experienced directors, the 'boys' club' is perpetuating the exclusion of women from those roles, and these same people - the boys' clubs heading up big business - are having a big influence on whether or not paid parental leave will become the norm in Australia.

Talkback feminism

I hope to prod, poke and probe current thinking about what it is like to be an Australian woman.  Feminist issues affect everyone in Australia, but often are presented using complex and confused language that relies on feminist jargon.  I want to unravel some of this to make feminist issues of interest to everyone.
