Maternity leave is for employed women
Let me make this clear - despite the attempts of the Rudd government to redefine paid maternity leave, it is not, I repeat NOT, a welfare payment.
Tony Abbott wants paid maternity leave
Who'd believe it - but hallelujah, hallelujah! At last, an Australian political party is listening to what women have been saying they want for a long, long time. Just take a look at some of my blogs from 2008...and 2009...
Paid maternity leave: a fix for pay inequity?
A recent news story about research by Ian Watson showing that whichever way you look at the data, women managers earn about 25% less than their male counterparts is no great surprise to anyone who reads this blog. Apparently between 70-90% of this wage gap cannot be explained, as the characteristics of male and female managers in the research sample are remarkably similar.
18 weeks in 18 months
Looks like I was right, and wrong. We are getting paid maternity leave, but not right now. In fact, we won't get it until we vote the Rudd government back into power in 2010. Sounds a bit like a game to me.
Paid maternity leave 2009
It looks a bit more promising - there is talk that this could be the year the federal government introduces a national paid maternity leave scheme. Mind you, the ACT government is leading the way by introducing their 18 week scheme for all their employees.
iMove into iMovie
I tested out my video making skills out the other day, using iMovie for the first time, and am absolutely amazed at the result, which is a brief ad encouraging the government to introduce paid maternity leave. Take a look! And while you are there, perhaps you might like to join the NFAW Facebook group.
